The United States rejoiced when our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI made his pastoral visit to the United States and the United Nations in April, but perhaps none so much as Cathedral Prep and her alumni. Many Cathedral alumni, current faculty and students were involved in the Papal Visit.

Msgr. John Maksymowicz (‘65) concelebrated the Papal Mass at National Stadium in Washington, DC on Thursday, April 17, 2008.

Msgr. Anthony Sherman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops helped to coordinate all of the Papal Masses.

Fr. Joseph Holcomb (‘71) helped welcome the Pope to the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, where Fr. Holcomb is assigned, on Wednesday, April 16, 2008.

Fr. Anthony Hernandez (‘86) was the Diocesan coordinator for the Papal visit and did an incredible job coordinating the Pope's arrival and departure ceremonies.

Fr. Kieran Harrington (‘89) was the host for the entire Papal Visit on the Diocese's Prayer Channel on TV.

Msgr, Joseph Calise (‘72), Rector-Principal, was among the concelebrants for the Holy Father's Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral on Saturday, April 19, 2008. Joining him in concelebration were Msgr. Gregory Wielunski (‘69), Fr. Joseph Fonti (‘84), Fr. Marc Swartvagher (‘86), Msgr. Robert Thelen ('65), Msgr. Sean Ogle ('68) and many other Cathedral alumni.

Fr. John Cush (‘90), current faculty, Mr. Daniel O'Keefe, vice-principal, and current faculty Ms. Diana Raschella, Mr. Rolando Lopez and Mr. Victor Santos accompanied twenty Cathedral students to the Youth and Seminarian Rally at St. Joseph's Seminary in Dunwoodie on Saturday, April 19, 2008.

All of the current faculty and students of Cathedral had the once in a lifetime opportunity to attend the Papal Mass at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, April 20, 2008. Msgr. Calise, Fr. Cush, Msgr. Ogle were among the many priests assisting with the distribution of Holy Communion at the Papal Mass. In addition to our Bishop, Nicholas DiMarzio, our auxiliary Bishop, Octavio Cisneros and our retired Bishop, Thomas Daily, Bishop Gerald Barbarito (‘67) of Palm Beach and Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua ('43) concelebrated with the Holy Father.

Were you at any of the Papal events? Please write us and let us know!

Additional Postings from fellow Alumni

From Brian Casatelli '91:
I've been meaning to send in some pictures from the Pope's visit.  I went to the speech he gave to the United Nations staff (a short speech after he addressed the General Assembly) where he thanked us all for what we do.   I happened to see him drive up fifth avenue on Saturday and finally, UN staff had great seats for the Mass at Yankee Stadium which was wonderful.
Some of the many photos I took can be found here:
